Kaneaki Heiau State Park

Makaha Valley is home to a 15th century Hawaiian temple, or place of learning called “heiau”.  This heiau has been restored and is the best preserved remaining heiau on the island of Oahu.

Originally dedicated to the Hawaiian god “Lono”, Kaneaki Heiau was originally an agricultural heiau which the Hawaiians used to worship harvest and fertility.  By the 17th century, the heiau had gone through five renovations and had doubled in original size.

King Kamehameha I, prior to the unification of the Hawaiian Islands in 1810, visited this heiau and rededicated it to his war god “Ku”.  Consequently, there was a time in the history of this heiau which warranted human sacrifice as it was reclassified as a “luakini heiau”.  Kaneaki Heiau remains as one of the few heiau of its kind on the island, and is the last luakini heiau in Wai’anae.

Today, Kaneaki Heiau remains a sacred place to Native Hawaiians.  When visiting the heiau, it is recommended to visit the site with respect. The site is open to the public but sits on private land.  Kaneaki Heiau may be visited every Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00am-2:00pm.  (A vehicle with current registration and insurance is required to gain entrance).

Keneana Cave
This lava cavern was 450 feet in length (has since been blocked for safety sake), and large enough for exploring, is just a few minutes drive from Makaha Resort.  This cave holds significance in na mo’olelo (Hawaiian folk lore and stories).  Numerous stories are told of Hawaiian demi-gods like Maui and Hina.  But, the cave is most known for a Hawaiian shark god who used the cave to escape capture from local villagers.

Kaena Point
Kaena Point sits on the western tip of the island and is one of the best spots on the island to sight our famous humpback whalesduring the winter season. Kaenahas excellent fishing groundsand is home to large nesting colonies of rare and endangered seabirds.  Please note, there is no road accessto the point.  Hikes takeapproximately 2 hours round trip.

Makaha Surf Beach
Visit Makaha Surf Beach, a Mecca for surfers worldwide.  Home to several annual surf completions, this beautiful white sand beach is ideal for snorkeling, swimming, surfing, body boarding, kayaking, or sunbathing.  During our winter season, it is not uncommon for Makah Surf Beach to have waves up to 25 ft!  Makaha Surf Beach does have rest facilities and lifeguards on duty.

Yokohama Bay
The last stretch of sandy beach on the leeward coast, and just a quick drive from Makaha Resort.   With the rocky bottom and aggressive ocean, shells are in abundance for the experienced diver and collector.  With virtually no buildings and development in this area, the environment and solitude sets the clock back to a simpler time of untouched Hawaii.  Surfing spot for experts only.

Ko ‘Olina Lagoons
Oahu’s most picturesque lagoons – the crown jewels of the Ko ‘Olina Resorts.  This series of sheltered lagoons make it a perfect spot for beginner swimmers.  In a highly manicured setting, the Ko ‘Olina lagoons are a great way to spend your Hawaiian day.

Ma’ili Beach Park
One of several long stretches of sandy beaches along the Leeward Coast.  And the best spot to pick puka shells!  Please use caution when swimming, the beaches along this stretch of sand can sometime possess strong currents.

Poka’i Bay Beach Park
A beautiful calmswimming beach on the Leeward Coast.  An excellent spot for kayaking and paddle board.  This sheltered bay is perhaps the safest beach for swimming in all Wai’anae.

“We liked its location away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, and the setting of the lodgings as well. The rooms and furniture could do with a bit of uplift, but overall we had a pleasant stay. There are some great views of the ocean from the property, and there are some nice beaches without a lot of crowd just a couple of miles away.“
